Compendium Jacket Reveal & Background

This is not actually much of a reveal, since the jacket for Compendium has been around on my blog and other places for a while, but I’m posting it here in all its magnificent glory along with a couple of the other images that Day rendered as part of the image creation process. I get a lot of compliments on this book cover. People love it, and so do I!

I wanted the book cover to be self-referential of the artifact itself, and all of the covers for the Artifacts of Lumin series will feature components of the artifacts the novel is named after. Compendium the book cover is a rendering of how I imagined Compendium, the ancient tome and fount of knowledge for all of Lumin, looked when I wrote the book. The cover for Ocularum is already finished, but you will have to wait to see that one. I can say that I love it even more than this Compendium cover, so hopefully you will as well.

After Compendium has been out for a while, and I start to get questions about how it is supposed to work, I will give more detail about why it looks like it does. Suffice it to say that the medallion and filigree were both carefully selected for practical reasons. The back of the book features a gorgeous rendering of Mia that Day created in zBrush. Below is the original 3D image she created and exported into photoshop to make the line drawings that you see on the back of the cover.

It is hard to see the incredible detail that was modeled in this small picture, so if you want to get a closer look, you can click on it, but I suggest you visit Day’s Portfolio to see an even better description. In this shot, Mia is wearing the tropics garb that she favors in her hammock of Hackberry. She’s got her flowy pants, tunic and lapin bag. She’s holding Compendium out, which is mostly to give her an action pose. Day also modeled her locket in detail, but it was left out of the final render of the figure. However, you can see it in the line drawings below.

The image above show’s a detail of Mia’s locket on the left and a line drawing of the 3D rendering of Mia on the right. The image on the right is the one on the back cover. The locket was on the original version of the back jacket, but it was cut for the final. However, this image shows you generally what it is intended to look like. Once you have read the book, you will understand more about it, so I won’t spoil it by discussing it here. Also, this locket is almost like concept art, since the map of Lumin has since been refined. You may be able to see differences between this rendering and any future maps that appear in my books or that I make available for download.

Well, there you have a little bit about the creation of Compendium’s amazing front and back covers. There is even more amazing concept art that Day is hoarding, but perhaps I will have more in the future to share.
