People have already started sending me sites to help me on my way. My brother sent me a link to One Bag, which is a site dedicated to the art of packing efficiently for trips, whether long or short. Some of the tips, such as bundle packing, have definitely been helpful. The packing list may also come in handy, although, I think I’ll need more than three pairs of socks and underwear. I am going to be gone for four months.
I really have started to compile a packing list. I’m allowed two bags, with a max of 50 lbs each. I have one really large bag, though, so I might just pay for overage charges on that and not have to put up with another large bag… especially since I have to store it in my apartment. I may take a smaller bag too, for weekend trips and for when we go out and about for spring break. I was debating bringing my rolling backpack, but it looks like I’ll only have a max of two classes per day, so I likely won’t need the extreme bag space that I currently need. I will probably pack some clothing into my carryon, on the off chance that my luggage does not make it to tokyo with me, which I can totally see happening… given my one-hour layover in Chicago.
I’ve gotten a start on the items I need for cold-weather usage, although I’m going to put some stuff, such as silk long-johns and a wool bucket hat, on my Christmas list. Coming from Florida, I am not used to needing really heavy clothing. I’m hoping I can get away with one really nice, heavy outer coat, and a bunch of light layers underneath, rather than a bunch of bulk.
David (who is the awesomest!) bought me a gorgeous coat that is nice and heavy. It’s made of a soft wool and has a removable rabbit fur collar, so it should keep me toasty warm. I’m a little worried about getting it in white, but it’s really the most versatile color and looks really nice, so, I will just have to keep from getting it dirty by not sitting on the subway! I could have chosen black, but I really think a huge coat like that would have washed me out in black and basically just been depressing. Besides, white/cream goes with greys and browns with less potential for clashing.
I also found some gloves on sale in leather, lined with cashmere, that I will probably order online. None of the gloves I have do a sufficient job at keeping my hands warm, and I think that’s because I need more blood, or something vital like that. So, I’m going to go the for it and just get leather AND cashmere, and hopefully that will work where just leather has failed in the past.
Given how wimpy I am about the cold, I’m sure that this stuff will come in handy down here, even though such heavy clothing is not normally considered a necessity for Florida weather.
